PHILADELPHIA, Oct. 5, 2012 – The Philadelphia courts have stepped up collection efforts for individuals owing costs, fines, supervision fees, restitution and bail to the criminal courts.
The free seminar, Culture of Collection: The New Court Payment System, takes place on Friday, Oct. 19 from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. the Philadelphia Recovery Community Center, Unit No. 6 in the Lehigh Pavilion, 1701 W. Lehigh Ave. in Philadelphia.
“One in five city residents owe money to the courts. Individuals who are not current with their costs risk loss of public benefits, wage garnishment, sheriff’s sale and other financial consequences,” said Kitchen (D-Phila.). “Avoiding these payments is not worth the risk. There are affordable options and payment plans. I encourage everyone who owes payment or thinks they owe payment to the courts to attend this free seminar and learn the steps they need to take.”
There will also be a special documentary screening of Pay Up! Criminal Justice Debt in Philadelphia.
