John Pittas, a Pennsylvania man has been found liable for the $93,000 unpaid nursing home bill of his mother, who has moved away to Greece after receiving care in a nursing home for the purpose of rehabilitation after an automobile accident. The Pennsylvania appeals court made the ruling under the state’s law of filial responsibility. The case is J-A36025-11 2012 PA Super 96 Health Care & Retirement Corporation of America v. Pittas.

The nursing home used Pennsylvania’s filial responsibility law to sue Mr. Pittas for close to $93,000 in unpaid bills. The law requires children to care for their indigent parents. The appeals court has now affirmed the verdict in the nursing home’s favor.
