(CNN) — The grandmother and stepmother, Joyce Hardin Garrard, 46, and Jessica Mae Hardin, 27, have been charged with murder of a 9-year-old Alabama girl who died Monday after allegedly being ordered to run around her family’s house for hours as punishment for lying about taking a candy bar.
Police were called when the child suffered a seizure and was unresponsive. Savannah Hardin died Monday at Children’s Hospital in Birmingham; a state pathologist in Huntsville ruled her death a homicide.
