According to The Palm Beach Post reports, John Goodman, 48, a wealthy Florida man and Polo Club Palm Beach founder, has adopted, in October 2011, his longtime partner Heather Laruso Hutchins, 42, in a move critics say will protect the man’s assets during an upcoming lawsuit surrounding a deadly car accident. The The Associated Press reports that Goodman faces a civil wrongful death lawsuit filed by the parents of Scott Patrick Wilson. Wilson was killed in 2010 when Goodman allegedly ran a stop sign during which he had a blood-alcohol level two times above the legal limit. The trial is scheduled to begin March 27, 2012.

Additionally, Goodman faces a March 2012 criminal trial for vehicular homicide, DUI manslaughter, and leaving the scene of a crime. Those charges carry a sentence of up to 30 years in prison.
